As we come to the end of 2013 I look back at all of the things that I have accomplished this year. One part of my life that I am proud of is how much I have done to try and help improve our planet. My wife and I recycle everything that we can and we reuse our paper bags at the grocery store to cut down on waste.
Another small change that most people don't think about is that you can stop buying canned food when there is an option to use cartons. A good example of this is chicken stock. You always have the option to purchase cans or paper carton containers. The green thing to do is always choose a carton.
Earlier this month I received a few Pacific Foods products that are made with Tetra Pak cartons. Tetra Pak cartons are made of 70% paper, a renewable resource, from selectively harvested re-grown trees that are FSC-certified. The unique packaging process helps to preserve the flavor and nutrients of food without the use of preservatives. Tetra Pak cartons also make up 60% less landfill waste than using cans.
There are so many different foods that come in cartons. The ones I received were chicken stock, pumpkin puree and cranberry sauce. I thought all three products were a great alternative to what I normally use and the fact that I was doing some good to the enviroment just made them even better to me. Become Carton Smart in 2014 and make the pledge to use cartons over cans whenever possible.
